In the summer 2023 some of the THINK members got together to create the first draft of a systems map to capture the barriers and enablers of active travel for all in the UK.
In total we spent a whole day together over two sessions, reflecting on how best to show the connections between elements of policy, funding, culture, psychology, infrastructure and habit that combine to represent in one place how the system of active travel currently functions in the UK. We then added notes to the map elements to highlight how each one has greater nuance when it comes to accessibilty for all.
In doing this exercise THINK wants to ask the question, can a tool like this systems map be useful when it comes to decision making, commissioning and funding active travel infrastructure and interventions? By seeing all the elements in one place, can this help to ensure more joined up approaches to active travel accessibility for all?
We now invite the wider THINK membership to reflect on the draft map and add anything that they think is missing in the map content or notes, without making it too dense with information as to render it overwhelming to use.
By following the link below to the presentations about how the team developed the map you will be able to interact more with the map by zooming in on detail and moving around the map and open up the accompanying notes for the different elements of the map to reveal further details.
